Evangelical and Reformed (Lutheran) Church Parish Records in Russian Poland

Large numbers of Germans have lived in what is now modern Poland for hundreds of years. This is the result of both migration eastward from various German provinces as well as the numerous boundary changes that took place over Polish regions from the Partitions of the late 1700s through to WW II. Most of these Germans were affiliated with the Evangelical (Lutheran) faith.

The parishes listed below are all located in what was referred to variously as Russian Poland, Congress Poland, Mittelpolen (Middle Poland) or the Kingdom of Poland between about 1815 and WW I. The list is derived from a variety of German language sources including:
- a map by A. Breyer dated 1938 titled “Karte Der Deutschen Siedlungen in Mittelpolen”
- “Verzeichnis der Gemeinden und Pastoren der Evangelisch-Augsburgischen Kirche in Polen, Jahr 1910”
- a map entitled “Die evang.-Luth. Gemeinden in Mittelpolen- 1939”
- a map entitled "Die Gemeinden der Evangelisch-Augsburgischen Kirche in Polen am 1.9.1939"
- the LDS Church Family History Library (FHL) Catalog
- the Polish Archives online search engine

Family History Library filming generally ends with the 1880s records, because the remaining records were not yet 100 years old at the time of filming. Because records after about 1868 are in the more difficult (to us) Russian Cyrillic, the Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe at this time limits the indexing of Lutheran parish to 1868 (except for those cases where the film continues in German or Polish) and earlier. SGGEE will also include later indices where our volunteers have undertaken the translation of the later indices that are available.

Handwritten records were kept for all births, marriages and deaths that were reported to the Lutheran Church. In most cases the churches kept these records on behalf of the government so many of them are often referred to in LDS catalogues as Civil Records. Since everyone regardless of ethnicity was civily obligated to register, a Lutheran would have registered at a Catholic Church if there was no Lutheran Church nearby.

Notes for the list that follows:

1. The dates covered by the microfilmed or archived records are shown. If a single date is shown, it generally represents the founding date of that parish.

2. Clicking on any parish below will take you to a listing of LDS microfilms for that parish. In some cases the link will take you to on-line sources (usually a Polish Archive) which are now providing free on-line viewing of images. Therefore you may see more than one line entry for a specific parish. The notes column will explain what is being offered.

3. No attempt has been made to correlate the parishes listed below to those of present-day Poland.

4. NKLR= No known Lutheran Records

5. Note that some of the parish films include as many of three different copies of the same record. It is believed that where these multiple copies exist, that the FHL filmed actually found the original record and one or more hand written copies as produced by the parish clergy. See Suwalki films below for an example.

Bialystok - Some of these records (as held by the Latvian State Historical Archive) are now digitized and available on line. Please refer to the Neudorf / Neubrow notes on the Volhynian page for details.

Neudorf / Neubrow - Most of the records in this list are for parishes of the Ewangelisch Augsburg (Lutheran) Church in Poland. The LDS microfilm indexing system incorrectly identifies the film for this parish as Ewangelisch Reformierte (Reformed) Church. In fact, it too was Ewangelisch Augsburg. This parish was actually on the east side of the Bug River which puts it in Grodno Province (today Belarus) and therefore technically not in Russian Poland or Volhynia. However, many people from here migrated further east to Volhynia and they often identify this parish as Volhynian. We therefore include references to it within our databases. This parish was also the oldest long standing German settlement in Polish territory going back to the 1600s. The LDS records identify this location as Moscice which is on the west side of the Bug River in the Wlodawa district. Further research is therefore required to determine if it also covers some Germans settlements in the northern part of what was later the Lublin Parish.

Warsaw - From Al Muth:  Lutheran records for 1808-1825 are available on microfilm but they are designated as Civil Records resulting in 157 reels of film to look at for that time period.  If you know which of 8 districts they lived in, this will narrow your search.  A map of these districts is available (requires djvu plug-in to view).
